About the Book

The problem isn't effort; it's the illusion and bias towards luck!
How to seize control of the life you desire
Instead of kneeling before impending fate

Have you truly not tried hard enough? Absolutely not. You strive day and night, meticulously planning, yet the results remain stagnant. Meanwhile, others seem to put in less effort but manage to seize great opportunities and thrive. Each time, you blame yourself, thinking, "Luck just wasn't on my side," and give up. You trap yourself in a web of resignation. Numerous self-help books on the market preach the "law of attraction," suggesting that if you just wish hard enough from your couch, the universe will conspire to help you. Or they blindly demand "effort," often leading us into another state of helplessness and resignation.

Tina Seelig, who has dedicated her life to studying the brain and human behavior, delivers a sharp critique: "Don't leave your life to fate, which is given to you without effort. Luck is an area you meticulously control and design through your actions." Good fortune isn't a lottery ticket that falls from the sky. The winds of opportunity are blowing everywhere, even at this very moment, and success depends on "whether you have the courage and skill to catch those winds and hoist the sails of your life." This book, built on a solid academic foundation including Daniel Kahneman's behavioral economics, Carol S. Dweck's mindset theory, Martin Seligman's research on optimism, and Robert Cialdini's psychology of persuasion, strips away the mysticism surrounding luck and thoroughly dissects the "causal law of good fortune." There's no vague false hope or "feel-good platitudes" here. It merely equips readers with practical action tools to maximize their chances of success by expanding their "Luck Surface Area."

Build your boat, gather your crew, and hoist your sails!
A three-step life-pioneering formula to tear through uncertainty and change the game of life.

The author distills the entire process of seizing the initiative of opportunity by catching the winds of luck amidst the unpredictable storms of life into a clear framework of "boat and voyage."

- PART 1. Building the Boat (Inner Construction): Establish core values that will keep you grounded even in turbulent waters, break down self-defeating inner narratives that hold you back, and boldly expand your risk profile.
- PART 2. Recruiting the Crew (Expanding Relationships): Move beyond solo navigation and build the best power network to bring you opportunities through "five-minute kindnesses," bold requests, building trust, and resolving conflicts.
- PART 3. Hoisting the Sails (Execution and Breakthrough): Add intentional spontaneity to your daily life, take calculated risks, use failures as stepping stones, and finally turn the tide of your life.

This book does not deceive readers with vague admonishments. It is equipped with a 'risk meter' to objectify one's comfort zone and vulnerabilities, a 'failure resume' to transform the debris of failure into assets for growth, a 'personal user manual' to achieve maximum synergy with others without friction, and the '37 percent rule of exploration' to eliminate hasty regrets and chronic indecision, and seize the best timing. The moment you close the book and step outside, you will hold in your hands the sharpest practical tools you can immediately wield in your daily life. Do not hesitate and sit back any longer. Grab these tools and directly intervene in your life!

"Look at me, pulling out the application I'd thrown in the trash!"
There's no turnaround for those who cower in their comfort zone!
Vivid dramas of life reversals captured from the Stanford campus and the front lines of Silicon Valley

The Power of Action Over Luck is full of raw, true stories of people who overturned their lives when faced with the precipice of limitations and shortcomings. Above all, Tina Seelig herself is living proof. "Was I lucky? Of course! But that good fortune didn't just fall into my lap" (p. 217). Despite earning a Ph.D. in neuroscience, she spent over a decade adrift. Then, she took a small risk: she retrieved a job posting she'd thrown in the trash because the position seemed too junior, applied, and landed a job at Stanford. A casual conversation with a stranger on a plane led to a global bestseller, and she rose from an entry-level position to a practical professor at Stanford, using "small actions" as a catalyst to create greater luck for herself at every turn.

The stories of the individuals in the book also offer provocative and clear lessons. From Oliver's spontaneous adventures, like offering an umbrella to a stranger on a rainy day or turning chance encounters into job and relationship opportunities, to Monique, who, reluctantly getting out of bed and throwing a jacket over her pajamas, met her lifelong partner; to Batu, who, overcoming the challenge of blindness, kicked a soccer ball wrapped in a plastic bag, broke through his limitations, and expanded his horizons globally; to Barkotelle, who conquered six languages and earned admission to Yale through a small but rigorous routine of memorizing five words a day; to Sarai, who, undeterred by the stigma of being an undocumented immigrant, entered a competition and created an innovative platform—the truth these individuals embody is singular: luck is not the exclusive domain of the chosen, and only those who boldly throw themselves into the seemingly insignificant moments of everyday life, which others carelessly overlook, seize the opportunity to turn their lives around.

Stop drifting and become the helmsman of your life!
Become one who creates and seizes luck, not one who waits for it!

The vast sea of life always brings with it great storms and headwinds. However, a skilled navigator does not blame the direction of the wind and give up, but rather twists the angle of the sail to propel the ship forward. Will you passively be swayed by fate and remain in a safe harbor, or will you confront the world head-on and create your own waves of fortune? This book is the most powerful guide to action for those who are crushed by helplessness and anxiety, helping them reclaim control of their lost lives. Now, stop blaming bad luck and hoist your own sail to cut through the fierce waves! And boldly turn the rudder towards your desired course!

Mel Robbins, a master of motivation and author of The 5 Second Rule, attests to the practical explosive power of this book, saying, "If you follow the formulas in this book, you will surely live a better life." A life that creates its own luck is never achieved by a fluke overnight. A small step you take today, a small kindness you extend to a stranger, one bold adventure you undertake despite fear, accumulates with compound interest and returns as a powerful current of good fortune that will completely change your life in the future. The moment you make the action strategies in this book "yours," you will be completely reborn as a strong navigator who cultivates your own luck, no longer someone who waits for it.

"Remember that destiny (what happens even if you do nothing) and luck (opportunities you create) are completely different. We are always dancing with the world as our partner, and who leads the dance and who follows constantly changes. Like the wind, luck is invisible, but it is always around you. Whether you seize it to achieve your goals is entirely up to you." _p.287

Inside the Book

The skill of seizing good fortune can be learned and mastered. The key is to understand the laws of how luck operates and how to leverage them in the process of achieving your goals. There is no magic power in the world. Everything has a cause and effect. Our actions now inevitably influence what happens in the future. Like gravity, luck is invisible, but we must believe that the laws of luck are at play. When we properly understand how the world works, we can recognize and utilize opportunities that are all around us.
To seize good opportunities and take action, one needs courage to take calculated risks. Talking to a stranger in a cafe, for example, certainly carries risks (you might be rejected or cringe from awkwardness). But that small choice can trigger a series of events and lead to surprising results. In fact, this book is proof of that. The starting point of this book was a conversation I had with a man sitting next to me on a plane 18 years ago, one morning. If I had put on my headphones and fallen asleep, this book (and the three preceding ones) would not exist. The story I'll share in Chapter 13 shows how one conversation can change a life.
---p.15 "Introduction | Seize the Winds of Luck"

There's a case study I often share in my classroom. This study, written by Harvard Business School, is based on the real-life experiences of Daniel Kim (a pseudonym). Daniel, the CFO of a tech startup, was asked by the CEO to approve the use of company funds for personal expenses. The misappropriation was growing. The CEO would buy luxury shoes for his lover with company money or stay in luxury hotels far more expensive than the business trip budget. He used his position and influence to convince Daniel that such expenditures were reasonable and justified. Unfortunately, Daniel was swayed by the CEO and initially approved small amounts, but over time, the scale of approvals grew larger. This case shows that once you cross the line and compromise your values, it becomes easier to compromise again. I tell my students this story and emphasize four things to prevent such mistakes:
? Clearly define your core values.
? Don't take the bait. A small compromise today leads to a bigger compromise tomorrow.
? Keep a group of advisors nearby to help you evaluate questionable requests.
? Always have an exit strategy in case someone pushes you towards a wrong choice.
---p.50 "01 Anchor Your Inner Balance"

Good fortune is a direct byproduct of stepping outside your comfort zone. This is because stepping outside your comfort zone expands your 'luck surface area.' This concept, proposed by Jason Roberts, is an evolution of Jim Collins' Return on Luck, introduced in Good to Great. According to Roberts, the luck surface area refers to the extent to which an individual or organization is exposed to opportunities. The larger the luck surface area (i.e., the wider the range of navigation), the higher the probability of encountering good fortune.
It's also important to remember that not all risks are equal. Some risks merely cause temporary psychological discomfort, while others can be life-threatening. Therefore, it's crucial to accurately assess your inclinations and abilities to minimize negative outcomes. For example, if you fear public speaking, you might feel nervous and tense when giving a presentation, but getting on a motorcycle you don't know how to ride is reckless.
---p.77 "03 Boldly Step Out of Your Comfort Zone"

In Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire Cat tells Alice, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there." Sometimes this mindset can be liberating, leading us to embrace the unexpected and discover unplanned opportunities. But sometimes, it's essential to have a clear destination. Just as when sailing the sea, catching the winds of luck in life requires different strategies at different times. Sometimes it's better to let the wind carry you and drift, but other times you must actively take the helm and navigate toward a clear goal. The important thing is knowing when to let the wind carry you and when to take the helm. Therefore, you need your own North Star to maintain composure and a sense of direction even when the wind shifts.
---p.103 "05 Set Your North Star to Guide Your Life's Course"

Remember, too, that you can express gratitude even when you don't get the outcome you desire. That expresses a much deeper gratitude, because you are finding meaning in the experience and expressing thanks, even though the outcome wasn't good. I led the entrepreneurship fellowship program at the Stanford Technology Ventures Program for 20 years. The acceptance rate for students applying to this program was extremely low, and rejected applicants were usually very disappointed. Sometimes a rejected student would send me a separate email, in some cases asking about their shortcomings, and in others complaining about the outcome. It was very rare for a student to say thank you for the opportunity to apply.
A few years ago, I received such a rare email from an applicant named Brian. He had been rejected from the program twice. I was so touched by his polite letter that I contacted him and asked to meet. We talked about various topics, and he was very interested in the different leadership styles he had experienced on the Stanford football team. At the end of our conversation, we created an independent research project for him for the next semester.
---p.131 "07 Express Gratitude in Specific Language"

Oliver Greenwald, who had recently graduated from college, contacted me after seeing my TED talk on the topic of luck. He told me he was already encountering good fortune by using many of the methods I mentioned in the talk. He felt it was a shame that most people weren't utilizing those methods and proposed an idea. "What if I became a 'luck coach' to help people find good fortune?" He wanted my thoughts on this idea. My answer? Of course, "That's brilliant!" Because many people would be happier if they had a personal luck coach.
As we talked, Oliver proved to be a magnet for good fortune. His secret? Adding spontaneity to his daily life, trying new things almost every day, and using the opportunities he encountered as stepping stones to the next level. For example, right after graduating college, he moved to Japan, a place where he had no connections, and lived there for a year. He was essentially starting from scratch, with no job and no safety net to rely on during tough times. He consciously tried to meet new people and accept any opportunity to create his own luck. He also took every opportunity and offer seriously, always following up, and always nurtured the connections he was introduced to.
---p.196 "12 Turn Unexpected Variables into the Best Opportunities"

If I had one superpower for attracting good fortune, it would be my ability to constantly build on small successes to reach the next level. Even the tiniest spark of possibility can become a blazing fire if you add fuel and fan the flames. Unfortunately, most people ignore or stomp out small sparks. But if you recognize them and invest fuel and effort, they can gradually grow into a massive fire. A fire doesn't suddenly appear out of nowhere if you just sit and wait. You have to be able to recognize small embers and carefully nurture them. From a distance, your success might seem to have fallen from the sky. But you know that it's the result of sustained effort and focus over a long time, out of sight. Just like consistent small investments, trivial actions accumulate with compound interest over time, eventually leading to huge achievements.
What follows is the story of my life. I will tell you how I fueled and worked on small sparks, and how small opportunities eventually led to much more valuable results. There were times when the spark died out despite my efforts. But usually, if I put in a little more effort and maintained focus, happy results would follow. As you read this story, I hope you will also consider how I jumped into opportunities that others would have just passed by, and at what points I could have seized the opportunities before me to leap further, but didn't.
---p.208 "13 Small Achievements Become Your Stepping Stones"

Embracing curiosity is like casting a fishing line into the unknown. Every time you ask a question or carefully observe something, the likelihood of hooking good fortune increases. Curiosity takes you to new places, sharpens your observational skills, and leads to conversations others miss. Each question you ask is a new line cast, bringing opportunities to reel in unexpected insights or connections. Over time, curiosity expands your network and knowledge, increasing your chances of encountering unforeseen luck. And it's not just me who thinks so. Theoretical physicist Albert Einstein attributed his success not to innate genius, but to endless curiosity. He said, "I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious."
---p.228 "14 Persistent Curiosity Opens Unexpected Doors"

Don't forget that obstacles and adversity can come at any time. While you can't predict exactly when challenges will arise, you can prepare by building resilience. One sure way to build resilience is to view failure as a learning experience. I strongly encourage people to write a 'failure resume.' This is the opposite of a traditional resume that lists achievements. In other words, it's about documenting experiences where you messed up, felt frustrated, or failed, whether in your personal life or professional realm, and what you learned from each of them. If you reflect on what mistakes you made, what you realized from them, and what you will change next time, you are much less likely to repeat the same mistakes. You are also less likely to dwell on mistakes and suffer from them long after.
---p.235 "15 Resiliently Bounce Back from Moments of Frustration"

Decide to decide what's important to you. Then, create your daily schedule to align with that goal. In today's world, where countless elements distract our focus, clear direction is paramount. Otherwise, you end up living a life that reacts to circumstances rather than actively choosing. Historian Will Durant, in his 1926 work The Story of Philosophy, expressed Aristotle's thought on this matter by saying, "We are what we repeatedly do." In other words, the content of your daily schedule clearly shows your important goals and the direction you are committed to. The moment you say 'no' to something, you are essentially saying 'yes' to something else. There are only 24 hours in a day, so you must prioritize how you spend that limited time. If you don't set priorities, you are prone to wasting time on unproductive tasks. Business strategy expert Greg McKeown said in Essentialism, "To choose not to choose is still a choice. It's simply choosing to let others make the decisions for you."
---p.260 "17 Boldly Prioritize"

Remember that destiny (what happens even if you do nothing) and luck (opportunities you create) are completely different. We are always dancing with the world as our partner, and who leads the dance and who follows constantly changes. Sometimes fate favors us, but other times it brings harsh trials. Even if the latter situation arises, you can always respond by adjusting your course, repairing your sails, and keeping moving.
Creating luck is a long-term endeavor. Your choices and actions accumulate over time like compound interest, eventually returning as immense good fortune. So, strengthen your inner self to build your boat, foster trusting relationships to recruit your crew, and work hard to seize opportunities and hoist your sails. Like the wind, luck is invisible, but it is always around you. Whether you seize it to achieve your goals is entirely up to you.
