It was a particularly long and thoughtful process to consider what new things we could convey to readers between what is imaginable and what is not. When preparing the first edition, the focus was on announcing that "Project Hail Mary" was a new work by the same author who wrote "The Martian" and "Artemis." For subsequent re-covers, we concentrated on finding images that added cinematic imagination. This time, free from any external constraints, we were able to fully dedicate our efforts to more dynamically capturing the hot and thrilling journey of Rocky and Ryland. There was a scene where I unconsciously held my breath and read with my eyes rolling as fast as the Earth's rotation, and thinking about how to print that impression on the new cover, I used 'two worlds' and 'encounter' as keywords. I wanted to create a meaningful cover for readers encountering "Project Hail Mary" for the first time and for those who already love this book, so I debated dozens of times whether or not to include a small silhouette in the center. As a first-time reader and designer, I thought, "Don't put it in!" but as a fan, I thought, "It must be there!" But how can you beat a fan? As a designer, and more importantly, as a fan of Project Hail Mary, I worked with the hope that this book would be something I would keep on my shelf for a long time.
