About the Book
Freedom from the gaze of others
The author confesses to past deficiencies, where he believed his value was determined by external numbers such as follower counts, sales graphs, and promotion scores, and asks readers:
“When you strip away your business card, title, and the applause of others, do you still remain yourself?”
This book is not merely a healing essay advocating for 'letting go.' Through numerous experiences gained while facing life-threatening situations as a professional soldier and unique insights honed in the digital battlefield, the author presents a practical philosophy rooted in life, offering concrete attitudes on how to escape the 'prison of others' gazes' and walk at one's own pace.
How is a life that doesn't need proof possible?
We live in a society of 'achievement addiction,' where performance equals self-worth. A life where one feels secure when numbers rise and anxious when they stop is like constantly running on a treadmill. The author, who managed numbers by writing every single day for over 700 days, realized that he had become a 'machine managing numbers' rather than a 'writer.' He then uses Erich Fromm's words to sharply contrast the 'having mode' and the 'being mode' based on this realization.
Possessions accumulated externally ultimately lead to emptiness, but a deeper sense of being within brings unshakeable peace. He states that he feels more free now, having torn up the instruction manual of numbers that defined him, than when he left his 14 years of military service and its ranks to venture into the wild.
How does deficiency drive me?
The book explores the fundamental 'deficiency' that makes us obsessed with proving ourselves, through five chapters. The author admits that his attempts to describe his 'weapons' as '120,000 followers' or 'author title' were, in fact, products of a deficiency stemming from a fear of not being recognized.
He now tells his readers, "You are already a miracle." He reminds them that value doesn't come from achieving something more, but that their existence alone is enough from the moment they are born. By the time readers close the last page, they will gain the courage to find a map drawn not by others' directions, but by their own footsteps.
From the Book
Instead of introducing myself, I display myself. My actions become data, and each day becomes a portfolio. As Fromm said, modern people treat themselves as commodities. A branded self, a managed image, a self that must constantly be upgraded. We feel the fear of being erased if we are not recognized.

Winning felt like being an okay person. That feeling was the problem. Being okay was always conditional; I was only okay when I was better than others. Comparison was like an addiction. Winning against others felt good for a moment but quickly faded. So I compared again.
I thought I would be okay if I was just a little further ahead. But even when I was ahead, my mind wasn't at ease. There was always someone ahead of me. I realized then that there is no end to comparison. No matter how far I went, I kept changing the standard and judging myself.

Those who chase results easily become impatient. But those who build themselves do not rush. Because they know their direction. I am the same. Today, I simply write diligently. Writing changes with each effort. Yesterday's sentences and today's sentences are different, and last year's thoughts and now's thoughts are also different.
A person whose routine is writing is someone who has conversations with themselves every day. Someone who faces themselves without fail every day cannot be the same as yesterday. Daily contemplation silently changes a person.
It accumulates invisibly, but over time, it leads one to an entirely different place.
