About the Book
On living unshaken in the face of life's finitude, suffering, illness, and death
The great reflections and inner records written by a philosopher emperor
Meditations is a diary-like record Marcus Aurelius Antoninus kept for himself while governing the Roman Empire and waging wars as emperor. The manuscript bears the Greek title "To Himself (ta eis heauton)," indicating that "Meditations" was a title given by later generations. Marcus was considered a successful ruler who led the tumultuous era as the golden age of the Roman Empire drew to a close, but he later experienced wars, plagues, political chaos, and the deaths of close friends and family. In the midst of life and death, he constantly asked himself fundamental human questions about life's essence, such as, "How can I walk the right path?", "How should I deal with suffering and misfortune?", "How can I live an unshaken life?", and "How should I face death?", thereby disciplining his inner self. Having studied philosophy since childhood, he was greatly influenced by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, and the short yet powerful aphorisms in the book contain insights and wisdom about the finitude of life and the changing natural world.
Stoicism emphasizes a life in accordance with universal order, or logos. In that sense, Meditations also serves as an excellent guide to the three disciplines that make up logos: perception, action, and will. It shows us the right way to live by looking at the world as it is (perception), forming appropriate relationships with others (action), distinguishing between what can and cannot be controlled, and accepting the present (will).
"Do you want to read Meditations? Then you must
read Gregory Hays's complete translation!"
_Ryan Holiday, author of The Daily Stoic, Stillness Is the Key
From a translation that captures the depth of the original text to rich commentary,
The latest complete English translation by Gregory Hays, an authority on classical interpretation
Meditations, published by Oasis, is a complete English translation meticulously crafted by Gregory Hays, a professor of classics at the University of Virginia and a leading authority on classical interpretation. It is translated to preserve the depth and intent of the original text, and includes a detailed commentary that explains Marcus's life, Stoic philosophy, the work's structure, core themes, and influence, making it easy for anyone to understand. No previous edition has presented Marcus's insights so directly and powerfully. Thanks to this, since its initial publication by Random House in the U.S. in 2002, it has been greatly loved by readers for over 20 years, with 37 printings, and has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide in countries such as Germany, Portugal, Vietnam, and the UK, achieving an overwhelmingly successful position as the number one in its category on Amazon among various editions.
Ryan Holiday, a world-renowned philosopher, thinker, and self-help mentor, well-known for his bestsellers The Daily Stoic and Stillness Is the Key, wrote the foreword to this book. He states that Meditations will continue to endure, just as it has for 2000 years, because it offers new insights every time it is read and provides philosophical answers to all recurring questions about human existence. He praised this book, which makes classics accessible in modern language, saying, "If you want to read Meditations, you must read Gregory Hays's complete translation." Furthermore, brain scientist Dr. Park Moon-ho wrote a recommendation, saying, "I recommend reading this book when your mind is unsettled." Amazon readers who read this book first left numerous reviews such as, "This is the first time I've read such a long and detailed foreword. I no longer get swayed by other people's nonsense. This is a must-read and must-own," "This book provides an excellent context for those unfamiliar with the Roman Empire at the time," and "Meditations serves as a guide for life. The translation, in particular, is excellent." Bill Clinton also famously said that he reads Meditations "at least twice a year," and it is a required reading for general education selected by major prestigious universities including Harvard, Oxford, and the University of Chicago.
"The best revenge is not to be like your enemy."
"Stand up straight. Or be made straight."
"Evil has always been the same, repeated over and over."
A timeless classic and a proven self-help book that transcends 2000 years
Messages of challenge and wisdom it conveys
Having survived the test of time, Meditations is a time-tested bestseller and the ultimate self-help book, offering us challenge, comfort, and life's wisdom. "The best revenge is not to be like your enemy" (Book 6, 6), "If you think you have been harmed, you have not been harmed" (Book 4, 7), "A gladiator picks up a weapon, uses it, and then puts it down, but a fighter's body is his weapon, so he merely clenches his fist. In this respect, a learner should be a fighter, not a gladiator" (Book 12, 9), "Stand up straight. Or be made straight" (Book 7, 12), "Imagine you are dead. You have lived your life, now live the rest of it properly" (Book 7, 56). The powerful and concise sentences he wrote remain valid principles for life today.
If you haven't read it yet, now is the time. With repetitive explanations that any reader can instantly grasp, sharp insights that sometimes lead us into a realm of spiritual practice, a friendly commentary that shatters the misconception that classics are difficult, and a luxurious cover that evokes a desire to own it, this edition will be the most special guide for those who dream of changing their lives. Whenever life doesn't go as planned and is difficult, or when your mind is complicated and confused, borrow the wisdom of Meditations. It will teach us how to prioritize dignity over emotion, how to maintain inner peace unperturbed by external stimuli and noise, and how to face life and death with courage.
