About the Book

《Il Machiavelli》 is not a book created to translate or interpret Machiavelli's writings. This book began with a single question: How do people and the world actually operate? And for 500 years, the thinker who most honestly answered that question was Machiavelli.

The working method itself was different. Instead of relying solely on 『The Prince』, this book read three original texts together—『Discourses on Livy』 and 『History of Florence』—to reweave the thoughts scattered across various works into a single coherent flow. The goal was not to merely reproduce the original text. What we aimed to change was the prose, and what we sought to preserve to the end was the essence of Machiavelli's thought. To assist readers, every section includes a reference to the chapter and section of the original work from which it originated, allowing them to trace back to the source at any time.

The writing style consistently prioritized restraint. We removed both exaggerated emotional comfort and fleeting, memorable sayings that quickly fade. The aim was to create sentences that resonate and resurface during moments of disappointment in people or when one's judgment wavers, rather than sentences that are quickly read and forgotten. We painstakingly refined the rhythm and density to achieve this.

This book also targets long-held misconceptions about Machiavelli. He did not say to distrust people; he said to understand them accurately. His realism was not a philosophy of distrusting humanity but one of avoiding misunderstanding it. 《Il Machiavelli》 re-examines Machiavelli precisely from this standpoint.

His insights were written in the language of politics, but today they operate just as effectively in the fields of organization and human relations, leadership and business, negotiation, and strategy. Times have changed, but human nature has largely not, and as long as human nature remains largely unchanged, the principles that govern reality are also unlikely to change easily.

If 《Übermensch》 was a book that asked, 'How should I live?', then 《Il Machiavelli》 is a book that reads, 'How do people and the world operate?'. The question that once looked inward now looks outward. And ultimately, these two questions converge into one. Only by accurately understanding the world can one maintain the direction of their own life to the very end.
