Book Introduction
Writing that breaks free from convention and authority
《A Room of One's Own》 is an essay developed by revising and supplementing the manuscript of lectures given at Girton College and Newnham College, women's educational institutions at Cambridge University, under the title 'Women and Fiction'. The narrative style, which follows the trajectory of thought by maintaining the lecture format, is the greatest characteristic of this work, along with the setting of the indeterminate narrator 'I' who leads the entire story. This narrative style breaks the dichotomous framework of writer and reader that male-centric literature had, allowing the reader and writer to generalize and empathize with the narrator's experiences from the same perspective. Furthermore, the process of questioning and finding answers, departing from conventional and authoritative writing methods, makes the reader think for themselves. In particular, the first sentence, which begins with "You may ask what connection a room of one's own has with the subject, since what we wanted to hear was about women and fiction," implies that the lecture will unfold from a perspective different from the general and dominant expectations regarding the topic of 'women and fiction,' that is, from a woman's perspective.
Ahead-of-its-time understanding of gender as a social construct
Virginia Woolf, a pioneer of modernism and a feminist in the early 20th century, was an iconic figure of her time. However, Woolf never claimed to be a feminist. It is also difficult to say that she was part of the radical feminist movement of her time, represented by suffrage. Woolf did not argue that women should regain the same rights as men and rise to an equal position with men. Rather than demanding gender equality, she focused on the differences between men and women. In the passage where she states that if women, as marginalized beings in society, feel "the unpleasantness of standing outside a locked door," then men trapped inside a locked door might be having an even more unpleasant experience, one can glimpse Woolf's pioneering perspective on recognizing gender as a social construct, that is, the socially ingrained differences between sexes.
