About the Book
People who even resorted to insects to make a living.
The novel opens with a black comedy twist on the all-too-familiar reality of South Korea. Jeong-han majored in trumpet, but music simply doesn't pay the bills. The choice of a young person, who majored in arts and physical education, struggling to make a living from their major and eventually wandering elsewhere, unable to find direction, then abruptly moving to a rural area with no ties and attempting to latch onto a government-supported edible insect farming project, evokes bitter empathy. The laugh-out-loud reality of desperately trying to grasp at any lifeline, whatever it may be, mirrors the reality of a young generation that isn't even given opportunities. What's more, the preposterous concept of "bread bugs," insects that taste like bread, functions steadily within the logic of reality because the author diligently laid out extensive research on related information, from indie bands to strawberry farms, young farmers, and edible insect cultivation. As a result, this absurd business seems like a feasible plan throughout the read.
A novel that races to the end, switching genres multiple times.
As pages turn with a chuckle, the atmosphere of the story gradually shifts. Villagers secretly smuggle out a few bread bug pupae, and a few days later, Jeong-han, who visits the place, discovers a blood-splattered house. No one knows what happened. The moment the reader passes this scene, they are forced to reconsider what kind of story they have been reading.
This is just the first gear shift the novel has prepared. 『Regulations for Bread Bug Cultivation』 doesn't settle into one genre; instead, it chooses to accelerate every time it changes direction. After the sticky, languid rhythm of a young person's tale of failure, it speeds up into a success story of entrepreneurship, then suddenly plunges into suspense. Such variations can easily make a story jump around, but in this novel, they serve as a basis for an immersive and thrilling ride. This is because the characters introduced in the earlier parts, their circumstances, and the rules that were inadvertently overlooked are tightly interwoven as the causes of subsequent events. Passages read for a laugh later return with completely different meanings. At that point, the reader will be swept forward with the novel, unable to look back.
Can salvation be possible even in a world where grace does not exist?
The rapidly unfolding story catches its breath towards the end. Instead of a hasty resolution, it holds onto each character who has walked the journey until the very end. The enduring impact of this novel's ending comes from the fact that it never treats the characters, whom we have followed through over 300 pages, as mere expendables. Jeong-han's final choice, after a lifetime of escaping reality, leaves a lingering impression that won't be easily forgotten. Can salvation be possible even in a world where grace does not exist? The author offers their own answer to that question.
"Opens with Bong Joon-ho, runs with Na Hong-jin, and closes with Park Chan-wook."
The recommendation for 『Regulations for Bread Bug Cultivation』 originated from a lengthy review posted on social media by book columnist Namgung Min, who purchased and read the book directly at the 2026 Seoul International Book Fair.
"What I found ambitious was that 'daringly,' this novel opens with Bong Joon-ho in one volume, races with Na Hong-jin, and closes with Park Chan-wook. It depicts the collapse of a world, and its pace is utterly phenomenal. The form of horror is also not supernatural or like a horror movie. It's a type of horror that is visible yet unknown, a genre that unleashes dopamine. In Bong Joon-ho's chapter, it confronts the weight of 'sin,' roughly hidden under the name of black comedy. After closing the final chapter, I stood up from the sofa and clapped."
All the publisher did was discover this heartfelt review, written with genuine language, and seek permission to reproduce it. Overlapping the names of three masters is an ambition familiar to anyone creating stories in Korea, but it is rare for that ambition to be fully realized in actual prose. The author, who has written film scripts, doesn't rely solely on the speed of events or thrill, but meticulously follows the fluctuating emotions of the characters within them.
Now, only one thing remains: to read 『Regulations for Bread Bug Cultivation』 and understand why those rules were necessary.
